Born in Lynn, MA on September 15, 1934 the daughter of the late Charles Mitchell and Josephine (Lewis) Mitchell. Shirley was the younger sister of the late Lester “Lefty”, and late Charles “Norrie”. As the younger sister, she was always trying to keep up with her older brothers, but she knew that they were always looking out for her. The memories of her childhood years lasted with her throughout her life and defined many of the values that were important to her. Shirley was a graduate of Lynn English High School class of 1952.
Shirley married Lester Silver on April 14, 1961 the beginning 50+ years of marriage until Lester’s death in 2014. She was the proud, loving mother of five boys – she loved each of them with all of her heart, never missing an opportunity to tell anyone about all of their accomplishments. Shirley worked several jobs throughout her life often talking about her time at the GE Plant in Lynn, MA and feeling accomplished with the work that she performed for the NH Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect. Shirley was a voracious reader – often completing a book in a couple of days, lifelong Red Sox fan – often telling stories of skipping work to go watch Ted Williams play LF for the Red Sox, and she regularly donated to charities that were important to her.
She is survived by Michael Silver and his wife Sherri of Leo, IN, David Silver of Gilmanton Iron Works, NH, Lester Silver Jr. of Manchester, NH, and Steven Silver and his wife Stephanie of Litchfield, NH, thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Gary.
Burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn MA on October 11th at 11 am. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 12th at the Puritan Backroom in Manchester, NH at 1pm. The family asks that you please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer's Association in Shirley’s memory.
