William "Bill" Bates Dougherty

Bill was born in Indianapolis, IN on August 25, 1928 to the late Al Dougherty of Connecticut and the late Angeline Bates Frost of Nashville, IN. Bill grew up in New York City and went to school at Great Neck Long Island High School and Trinity College excelling in sports and academics. He was a star football player and wrestler. Bill was a Korean War veteran. During his service, he met his first wife Inez (Eickhoff) Dougherty in Indianapolis, IN. They married and lived in Indianapolis and had 5 children. Later divorced, Bill moved to Nashville, IN where he met and married Kay F. Miller Dougherty of 25 years.

Bill worked for Indiana Bell Telephone for 38 years finishing up his career as a Safety Supervisor for the Northern half of Indiana until 1999. While retired, Bill served as President of the Nashville town council and worked with the Brown County Lion’s Club as a trustee for speech and hearing. Bill worked with Indiana University in supplying hearing aids for the needy, which also included working with Riley’s Hospital for Children. Bill was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 2011 for exceptional dedication and service to others by the Lions Club International Foundation.

Bill is survived by his wife Kay Miller Dougherty of Nashville, IN; five children- Bill Dougherty Jr. of Indianapolis, IN; Mark Dougherty of Columbus, IN; Mary Dougherty Hoyt (Mike) of St. Petersburg, FL; Jane Dougherty King (Larry) of Valparaiso, IN; and John Dougherty (Diane) of Versailles, KY. Three stepchildren, Drew Miller (Lisa) of Nashville, IN; , Jeff Miller (Dawna) of Bloomington, IN; and Cheryl Wyman (Bob) of Nashville, IN; seven grandchildren, Marc Dougherty (Jenni), Ike Dougherty (Allison) Sara Dougherty, M.C. Hoyt (Jeanie), Jenna Mathewson (Daniel), Allie Dougherty and Dan Dougherty; and seven step grandchildren, Justin Miller(Caitlin), Morgan Miller, Darcy Miller, Danielle Miller, Hannah Miller, Wyatt Wyman and Maris Wyman and 7 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28th at New Life Community Church, 1450 State Road 135 North.
