

Bill and his sister were born October 1, 1937, in Milan, IN to parents Gertrude and Floyd Zimmerman (deceased) of Dillsboro, IN. Bill is survived by his wife, Judy (Gregory) Zimmerman of Nashville, his two children, son, J. Matthew Zimmerman (Shawn) of Belgium; Martha M. Vorel (Honza) of Jackson, WY; sister, Betty Billman (Robert) and nephews David, Richard, Steve, William, and Andrew of Acton, IN; and two grandchildren, William Powell Zimmerman and Claire Maree Zimmerman.
Bill, a nature artist, was inspired by the woods, streams, and wildlife that surrounded his childhood home in Dillsboro, IN. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and later worked for the Gibson Greeting Card Co. as an art director. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Marines. In his lifetime, Bill has illustrated many books including The Birds of Indiana, named a state treasure by Governor Orr, Waterfowl of North America, and Bent’s Life History of North American Woodpeckers. He was recently honored by the Brown County Community Foundation to help establish an scholarship endowment fund. This year he received the Sassafras Audubon Society Barbara Restle Founder’s Award. The Brown County Stonehead property was named the Zimmerman Wildlife Bird Habitat, and he was honored with as a Goodfellow, by the Brown County Rotary. After the publication of Waterfowl of North America Bill was named a Kentucky Colonel. In 2006, he was given special recognition for individual leadership by the The Society for Brown County.
