AC was a man with a zest for life that was contagious. He loved a good story, a good joke, a great adventure—and perhaps most of all, the people he met along the way.
Growing up in Mississippi in the 1950s gave AC a lifetime of stories to tell. His tales of those days sounded like chapters from a novel—a glimpse into another time, usually told with plenty of color, a little mischief and a good laugh. Nicknames were the name of the game with this gent, and if AC gave you one, chances are it stuck.
AC graduated from Mississippi State University, where a summer opportunity in 1967 selling books door to door would ultimately help shape the course of his life. What began as a college student taking to the book field grew into a remarkable career of more than 30 years with Nashville-based Southwestern Company.
Sales was in AC’s blood, but his real gift was people. He rose to become a senior executive, motivational speaker and mentor, leading generations of college students through the same door-to-door experience that had started it all for him. Along the way, he taught far more than how to sell a book—he taught perseverance, confidence, character, leadership and how to keep going when the answer was no. His legacy lives on in the countless people he encouraged, challenged and inspired throughout those years.
AC was an adventurer at heart. He loved snow skiing and water skiing, riding ATVs through the Baja with his son, traveling through Europe, and simply experiencing what life had to offer.
And when fall rolled around, SEC football was serious business. AC loved the rivalries, the traditions, the Saturdays spent watching the games and all the spirited conversation that came with them. College football wasn't merely something he watched—it was part of the rhythm of his life.
He was alive—curious, spirited, funny and resilient. He made the most of the cards he was dealt and brought an unmistakable energy wherever he went.
Above all, AC leaves behind the people who loved him and the many lives he touched.
He is survived by his daughter, Stancy Clements Tomlinson, her husband John Tomlinson, and his beloved grandson Cruze Tomlinson; his son, Chase Clements; and his brother, Mac Clements. He is proceeded in death by his parents Louie and Kathleen Clements.
Allen “AC” Clements lived a life filled with stories worth telling. His voice, his humor, his wisdom and his unmistakable spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
He will be greatly missed. And now, AC, you are free to fly high.
