Amy Vonretta Swinney

It is with heavy hearts that we share the peaceful passing of Amy Vonretta Swinney, 90, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, on August 21, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee. Amy built a life grounded in faith, family, and service.

Born on June 23, 1936, in Columbia, South Carolina, to Heyward and Amy Williams, she grew up surrounded by love and a strong sense of community. She graduated from a local Columbia SC high school and later from Benedict College, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Education. She went on to obtain her master’s degree in Education as well, reflecting her deep commitment to learning and teaching.

Amy dedicated 40 years to her career as an educator. She began teaching in parochial schools in Columbia and, after moving to Nashville, spent three decades in the Metro Nashville Public Schools, including several Magnet schools. Teaching was her passion, and she poured her heart into her work. She received numerous awards and honors throughout her career and was known for her supportive nature, encouraging spirit, and disciplined approach. Her students and colleagues remember her for her warm demeanor, steady guidance, and sense of humor.

Beyond the classroom, Amy loved spending time with her family and friends, cherishing every moment of connection and fellowship.

Amy is survived by her daughter, Colleen Swinney, as well as nephews, cousins, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Tommy L. Swinney.

A Gathering of Family & Friends will be held at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204, on Friday, September 4, 2026, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204, on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:00 am.

A Committal Service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204, on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 12:00 pm.
