Andrew Jackson "Jay" Farrall

Andrew Jackson (J. A.) Farrall (Ferrell) passed away Monday April 11, 2011 at his home in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. He was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee Sunday August 19, 1923 to the late Thomas D. and Zella E. Burchett Ferrell.

A. J. enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Nashville, Tennessee December 2, 1940, taking training in Norfolk, Virginia. During his 20 years of service he served at various Naval facilities, training centers, Naval hospitals, aboard a variety of ships and with the Marine Corps. He saw service in the Atlantic aboard PC's, Sea-going Tugs, and on a P.T. boat involving sea rescue. In WWII he served aboard the USS South Dakota, a new battleship commissioned March 20, 1942.

He served aboard aircraft carriers and destroyers and in 1953 while serving with the 1st Marine Division in Korea, he received Meritorious (battlefield) promotion. Among other awards and medals were the Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Letter of Commendation with Combat v, Korean Presidential Citation, United Nations Medal, FMF Combat Insignia, Korean Service Ribbon with 2 stars, and Purple Heart with Gold Star. A. J. Honorably retired July 1, 1960 following 20 years active duty; returning to the Philadelphia area and immediately enrolled in college.

He attended the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and Glassboro State teachers College in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. While in school, he was employed with Renyx Field Corp, as a Field Representative in the business of selling stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. After school he would work in a local service station from 5:00 pm until 2:00 am. He received his BA at UCLA and his Master's in 1969. His teaching career included San Gabriel California School District, Arcadia California and Monrovia, California.

Jay moved back home to Tennessee November 1984 and in 1986 married Sharon Tudor Ford who survives him. He enjoyed writing and was an artist in his own right.

Funeral services will be 2:30 Friday April 15, 2011 in Woodlawn's Dignity Hall with is cousins Rick and Rob Ferrell speaking, burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park's Field of Honor.
