Ann Blackwell Shaw Hickerson, 86, a beloved mother and grandmother, died Sunday afternoon, November 9, 2014, following a stroke the previous week. A native of Nashville, she was the daughter of the late James Leonard and Lillian Blackwell Shaw. On April 17, 1948, she married Earnest Henry Hickerson, and they celebrated their 65th anniversary before he died in September 2013. For more than 52 years the Hickersons lived on Wilmar Drive in the Crieve Hall area, and in 2011 they moved to the assisted living community at Brighton Gardens of Brentwood. Mrs. Hickerson had been a very active member of the former Waverly Place United Methodist Church until that congregation founded Forest Hills United Methodist Church in Brentwood. She served on the building committee that designed Forest Hills and played a major leadership role in the craft bazaars held by the church women to help finance the new facility. At her church, she had been president of the United Methodist Women and a frequent circle chairman. For the past two years, she had attended services with her son at South End United Methodist Church. She was the emotional rock for her close knit family, inspiring her children and grandchildren to love, support and respect one another and others as well. Family was her most important priority, and she loved nothing better than preparing a home-cooked meal for family gatherings. An exceptional cook, she was famous for baking a variety of delicious cookies. She saw the sharing of cookies as a wonderful way to share love and holiday spirit with family, friends and shut-in church members. Ann Hickerson was an extraordinary seamstress, sewing clothing and quilts for all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. For many years she sewed commercially, specializing in formal wear, wedding dresses and attire for dozens of bridal parties. Survivors include two daughters, Becky Hickerson Shoffner and husband Bill of Burlington, North Carolina, and Sally Hickerson Queener and husband Kelley of Brentwood; one son, Earnest Henry Hickerson, Jr., and wife Diane of Nashville; seven grandchildren, Michael Shoffner, Jon Hickerson, Steven Shoffner, Sara Hickerson Hughes, Sean Queener, Casey Queener and Patrick Queener; and four great grandchildren, Emma Hickerson, Aidan Shoffner, Ethan Hickerson and Zoe Shoffner. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her two sisters, Nancy Shaw Elam of Clarksville and Dorothy Shaw Gee of Nashville. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at eleven-thirty in the morning on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at Woodlawn Roesch-Patton Funeral Home with Rev. Ann Cover officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from four o’clock in the afternoon until eight on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Woodlawn Roesch-Patton Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Forest Hills United Methodist Church, 1250 Old Hickory Boulevard, Brentwood, TN 37027 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
