Hartree, Dr. Anne Stockell. Died December 15, 2018 at age 92 after a long illness. Anne graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1943 as valedictorian. She received her BA from Vanderbilt University in 3 years, Phi Beta Kappa Society and Magna Cum Laude, was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Women’s Student Government Assoc., and Mortar Board National Honor Soc. She received her Master’s at Vanderbilt in 1949 and continued as a scientist in biochemistry research. She earned her PhD from the University of Utah in 1956. Anne moved to Cambridge, England, where she was employed in medical research and was later also appointed as a Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College at Cambridge University. Anne was a pioneer woman in her field of research. She authored over 50 scientific articles and received a lifetime achievement award from Britain’s Society for Endocrinology in 1990. Anne retired to Nashville in 1994 and was an active member of the Centennial Club and Westminster Presbyterian Church. She also served as a volunteer docent for Cheekwood and Vanderbilt Library. Anne competed in bridge tournaments nationally, achieving the status of American Contract Bridge League Life Master at the age of 78. Preceded in death by husband Edward Francis Hartree, Cambridge, U.K., father Albert Wright Stockell, mother Anne Kinkead Stockell, Nashville, TN, sister Sarah Stockell Farley, Naples, FL, and daughter-in-law Nomi Elkan Hartree, Twickenham, U.K. Survived by sons David Edward Hartree, Edison, NJ, William Stockell Hartree, grandchildren Catherine and Edward Hartree, Twickenham, U.K., sister Alice Stockell Robison, Atlanta, GA, and nieces and nephews in the U.S and overseas. The family thank the staff at The Cumberland Brookdale and Guardian Hospice for their compassionate care in her final years of life. Visitation will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 9.30 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 2 with Memorial Service at 11.00 a.m. (615-292-5526).
