Anne was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1937 to Anne and Charlie Murphy. She was the youngest of six surviving siblings and universally considered the most spoiled by her beautiful mother. Anne married Barney McConville, the tall, geeky man of her dreams in 1962 in a marriage that would ultimately make him considerably less geeky. After giving birth to Niall and Anne Louise in Derry Northern Ireland, Barney took full advantage of the Catholic Church’s prohibition on divorce when he decided to move the young family to Moundsville WV in 1966.
Anne settled into America and gave birth to her own Irish twins, Nicola and Maeve, in WV. After moving to Evansville, IN in 1980, Anne enjoyed a life full of family, friends, bridge and travel. For Anne, laughter was hospitality and to her, there was no situation that wouldn’t benefit from good Irish stories, and often, the same Irish stories. Where Anne went, good craic was sure to follow.
Whether it was her siblings, nieces and nephews in Ireland or the McConville clan she created in America, family meant everything to Anne. She could love fiercely while making sure no one took themselves too seriously.
She was a 35-year member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and a charter member of the Bridge Biddies card and travel group. She worked for two decades as an office manager before retiring as soon as she could and returning to visit her family in Ireland each year of retirement.
After suffering a stroke in 2015, she moved in with her daughter Nicola in Nashville where she was lovingly cared for while enjoying voracious reading, cups of tea and the NY Times crossword puzzles.
Her beloved husband Barney passed in 2005 and was spoken of by Anne every day thereafter. Anne is preceded in death by her siblings Sadie, Molly, Jim and Dodo and is survived by her brother Eugene. She is mourned deeply by her children Niall (Shelly), Anne (Matt), Nicola, Maeve (Rita), her grandchildren Michal, Britani, Cam, Nolan and Austin and her great-grandchildren Ethen, Maddie, Finn and Roderick. She is survived by Bridge Biddies Norma, Nancy and Mary.
Due to Covid considerations, the family plans family-only graveside service in Evansville in the coming weeks.
In lieu of flowers, go try the NY Times crossword puzzle and raise a glass to Anne.
