She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Longhurst, Jr, and survived by her children, Carol Anne (Tom) Nadeau, Suzanne Humphress, and John (Blanca) Longhurst III; seven grandchildren, Bobby Bibb, Jenny Bibb Schmidt, John Bibb, Bethany Teahan, Scott Humphress, Jessica Murdock, and Kinsley Longhurst; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Longhurst was the daughter of Phyllis Gwendoline and CHH Ross of Streatham, England.
Mrs. Longhurst was born in Lahore, India (Pakistan, now). She spent most of her youth in India, attending school and upon graduation, teaching. She met her husband in India, was married in Nashville in 1950, and they continued to live in India until after the birth of their first child. After moving to Nashville permanently, Mrs. Longhurst began teaching at Cathedral School until it closed in 1961, at which time she began teaching 7th grade at St. Ann’s School. She retired from the classroom in 1990, but continued to work as librarian. Over the course of many years, she made a tremendous impact on all those who knew her, especially her students.
Mrs. Longhurst became a United States citizen in 1996, a proud occasion for her and her family. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Gesneriad Society. She also enjoyed painting and creating original pieces of pottery, which are treasures for those whom she gifted with them. She most enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
