

Born August 28, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, Barbara graduated from Bellevue High School in Nashville in 1957. She was preceded in death by her parents Mildren and Jesse Shannon; brothers Jack and James"Jimmy" Shannon; her sister Peggy O'Kain and brother-in-law Jerry O'Kain; niece Pam O'Kain; and step-sons Thomas Bateman II and Scott Bateman. Barbara is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Thomas (Tom) Bateman; step-sons Chris, Paul (Karen), and Rhett (Kecia) Bateman; grandchildren Thomas "Buster" Bateman III (Louisa), Drew (Heather), Aaron (Lucinda), and Nick (Jenna) Bateman, Casey (Chris) Chauvin and Audrey (Alex) Nolte; sisters Judi and Carolyn Shannon; and daughter-in-law Susie Bateman. Tom and Barbara enjoyed their large family of great-grandchildren and neice and nephews.
Barbara began her career at Lifeway (formerly Baptist Sunday School Board) in Nashville and retired from Sun Trust Bank (now Truist) in downtown Nashville's main office as one of the vice presidents. She was a long-time member of Executive Women's International (EWI) and was designated "Woman of the Year" in 1981.
She appreciated beauty in her flowers and gardening with her "green thumb." Barbara and Tom, her husband, enjoyed traveling extensively all over the world as well as in the States. In the past she spent time playing the piano at nursing homes and volunteered at Ronald McDonald House.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to a charity of your choice. Visitation will be April 7 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Lebanon Road, and a memorial service following. Burial will be a private ceremony for family and close friends only.
