Barbara Holcomb Walker (“Babs”) (1941 – 2020)

Barbara Holcomb Walker (“Babs”) of Nashville, Tennessee, passed peacefully into the Kingdom of God in the early morning of Friday, June 26, 2020. She was at home and in the presence of her husband of 53 years, Robert Jackson (“Bob”) Walker. Babs had suffered in recent years from a prolonged illness, which ultimately took her life. She retained her sharp mind and sweetness until the end. She said how blessed she was to have her husband and her beloved children, grandchildren, brother, and three sisters visiting with her during her final days. She was at peace with God and with her life.

Babs was born September 21, 1941, and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, where many of her family reside. She was devoted to her brother John Holcomb III and sisters, Mary Holcomb Scott, Susan Holcomb Acker, and Beth Holcomb Frey, and many nephews, nieces, and extended family. Her large family held special importance for Babs her entire life. She leaves a loving husband and three devoted children: Hudson Walker (Julie) of Nashville, Jenny Walker Lenderman (Hill) of Nashville, and Andrew Walker (Elizabeth} of Birmingham. She was blessed by six wonderful grandchildren: Hudson Walker, Sinclair Walker, Anderson Walker, Walker Lenderman, Kate Lenderman, and Robert Walker, who were the joy of her life, one of whom predeceased her into God’s loving arms. She said she was looking forward to reuniting with him.

Babs graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1963 (BA). She was married to Bob in March 1967 and became a full-time homemaker. She blessed her home with three wonderful children, a strong and loving relationship with her extended family, and an ever-growing number of friends who enriched her life. Babs was a loving and devoted life partner to her husband, a gentle and loving mother to her children, and a loyal and steadfast friend to so many. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. Her family takes comfort in knowing that the pain of her illness has passed and that she is with God.

The family will hold a private service at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, attended only by her immediate family members. The family intends to schedule a memorial reception for friends and extended family when they feel it is safe and proper to do so.

The family wishes to thank the many friends who have expressed their love for Babs, and especially thank Ms. Vicky Phelps and Ms. Barbara White, who provided such loving care to her during the past few months of her illness. They also are grateful for the wonderful guidance and care given by her doctors, Karl VanDevender and Tom McRae. The family also thanks Dr. Sandra Randleman for her loving care and counsel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Pike, Nashville, Tennessee 37220.

She’s Gone home to live with her Lord

God Was walking in his garden,
One He made with His own hands,
The sun was shining on each blossom
young and old throughout the land.
In His Church He walker still searching,
for a lovely blooming flower,
Pausing there He found her ready,
To Be taken at that hour.
I will miss my friend and client of nearly 40 years but her sweet memories will be lasting in our hearts. Humbly submitted, Tina King

Our entire family mourns the loss of our dear friend, Babs Walker. Our
Children remember every Christmas Eve Dinner with the Walkers and
Family. When I had my brain tumor surgery years ago, Babs was the one
Who helped me constantly. Every problem was solved by Babs and I wish
I could have helped her more these past months. Our last phone conversation
Several months ago were so sad as she knew she needed help all the time.
She was so brave from the time she found out about her illness years ago
And I know she is a wonderful angel now as she has always been. We will
Miss her. God bless Bob and all the family. Ann and Noel

God gave me a wonderful opportunity to take care of Mrs. Walker. She never complained of her illness and always had a smile. Our many talks and driving excursions allowed us to share our lives. She loved the Lord, but most of all she loved her family. Her beauty and wit will be truly missed. She was my friend!
