GIBBS, Mrs. Barry Bennett, died after a short illness on January 22, 2012, in Nashville, TN. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Lynch Dearing Bennett and the late Louise Cecil Bennett. She was born on June 13, 1934, and lived almost of all of her life in Nashville. She attended Ward Belmont School and The Harpeth Hall School and was in Harpeth Hall’s first graduating class. She attended Sweet Briar College and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University, where she trained in speech and hearing therapy. Barry was happily married to Homer B. Gibbs, Jr. for 56 years. They started their married life in Houston, Texas, before moving back to Nashville in 1960. Barry enjoyed bridge, tennis, travel, cooking, reading, and gardening. She found great pleasure in time spent with family and friends in Sea Island, Georgia, over the past fifty years. She had many interests and volunteer affiliations, including: life member, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Fine Arts Center; life member, the Fannie Battle Social Workers; the Centennial Club; the Timberlee Garden Club; the Salvation Army Auxiliary; the Ladies’ Hermitage Association; the YWCA; and Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed the weekly Bible study group. In addition to many friends and extended family, she was beloved by her husband; her son, Boyd Gibbs (Joycelyn) and her daughters Becky Davidson (Paul) and Louisa Basarrate (Armando); grandchildren, Andrew Gibbs, the late Jake Gibbs, Bennett Davidson, Katie Davidson, Matthew Davidson, and Sophie Basarrate; her sisters, Myrtle Wissert (Bill) and Carol Taylor (Marshall) and her late brother Lynch Bennett, Jr. The family is grateful for the care of the staff of St. Thomas Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Fine Arts Center, First Presbyterian Church, or The Harpeth Hall School. Visitation will be held Sat., Jan. 28th from 12 noon-2 p.m., in the First Presbyterian Church’s Courtenay Hall, with the funeral service to follow. Private burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery with the family and close friends.
