Bascomb was born on July 12, 1945 in Louisville, KY, the son of Bascomb Waterfield and Imogene Crimm Thomas. They moved to Nashville, where he was raised and lived the rest of his life. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1963 and received a B.S. in Business Administration from Auburn University in 1967. Bascomb was a manufacturer’s representative for 20 years with The Henry I. Siegel (H.I.S.) Company, based in the city he loved, New York. At H.I.S., he received numerous regional sales awards and the National Salesman of the Year Award in 1986 and 1987. Bascomb then went to work in finance for Solomon Smith Barney and Wiley Brothers/Aintree Capital for the next 20 years.
Some of his numerous affiliations and memberships included Alpha Chi fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and Belle Meade Country Club.
Bascomb was preceded in death by his sister, Gail Thomas Peacock, of Charlotte, NC. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (Clay) Trabue; son, Leighton (Kelly) Thomas of Greenwich, CT; his grandchildren, Claire Ransom Trabue; Charles Clay Trabue V, “Quinn;” Lane Gramercy Thomas; and Kingsley Caldwell Thomas. He is also survived by his former wife and friend to the end, Suzanne Rye Caldwell, and his sister Janice Thomas Donelson of Vienna, VA, as well as seven nieces and nephews.
Bascomb will be remembered for the deep and abiding love he held for his family as well as his joie de vivre. His infectious sense of humor, perennial smile, and boisterous laugh made him unforgettable to everyone who crossed paths with him. Always smiling and talking, he greeted everyone, made you feel great, and had a compliment to share. Bascomb’s flair for fashion was unmatched and he inspired us all to dress our best. He loved animals, especially dogs, and they loved him in return. Over the past few years of his life, he had started a pet-sitting business that brought him much joy.
A service to celebrate Bascomb’s life will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 2:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to The Nashville Humane Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
