Betty Garner Brent, 97, of Nashville passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 10, 1923 in Franklin County, Tennessee to parents Tommy and Hattie Marie Garner. She remained in Franklin County until moving to Nashville as a young woman to begin a career, working for Aetna Life Insurance before moving to Washington DC to work for the FBI. The love of her life, Dorris Nolan Brent, traveled to Washington DC to propose, “marry her and bring her back to Nashville.” On November 10, 1951 they married, returning to Nashville to begin a wonderful marriage of over 49 years until his death in 2001. They had two adored sons and daughters-in-law they considered as their own, Mike and LuAnn (Nashville) and Joey and Beverly (Oxford, MS).
She was the beloved “Mimi” to her four grandchildren, Stuart Brent (Frances) of Nashville, Betsy Brent Holmes (Zack) Franklin TN, Holly Brent Eubanks (Jeff) Oxford, MS, and Zack Brent (Kate) Memphis, TN. and six great grandchildren, Davis Holmes (Franklin), Tallulah Brent (Nashville), Nolan and Dylan Eubanks (Oxford), Jane and Paul Brent (Memphis). She is also survived by numerous beloved and devoted nieces, nephews and many loving and devoted friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was predeceased by all six of her siblings, Louise Garner Jackson, Bill Garner, Tom Garner, George Garner, Bob Garner and L.B. Garner.
Betty was a member of Woodmont Christian Church, Nashville, where she was active in Sunday School, the CWF (Christian Women’s Fellowship) Circle #2 and the GEMS groups. Since 1961, Betty has been an active member of the Oak Hill Garden Club and an avid player in her Canasta Club since the 1960’s. Among other activities, she loved cooking great meals for family and friends. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, visiting Europe and the Holy Land, with her favorite travel being cruising with her children and grandchildren.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from four until six in the evening on Wednesday, March 3, and from ten o’clock until eleven in the morning on Thursday, March 4, to be immediately followed by services at eleven in the morning, all at Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, with Dr. Clay Stauffer and Dr. Roy Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville. Nephews and great-nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitations and services will be socially distanced.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the American Heart Association or Woodmont Christian Church. The family also expresses their gratitude to the staff and leadership of Belmont Village Senior Living, where she lived the past year, as well as the nursing staff of Guardian Hospice, and all those making her feel so loved.
