Bettye is preceded in death by her husband, William Alfred Carr (Bill). She is survived by her son, William Alfred Carr, Jr. (Al) of Sparta, TN, her daughter, Meredith Carr Melamed and son-in-law, Vincent Melamed, of Los Angeles, CA, and three sisters, Deana Babb, Sue Wallace and Norma Blackburn, of Madisonville, KY.
Bettye was born December 2, 1929, in Providence, KY. She graduated from Providence High School and received a Bachelor of Arts from Western Kentucky University, where she met Bill. They married in 1951 and moved to Nashville in 1953, where they raised their family in Donelson and were members of Donelson View Baptist Church. She was an avid reader, expert quilter and lover of crosswords.
Bettye started a teaching career in rural Kentucky in 1952 and later served as a classroom teacher and as a facilitator for enrichment programs and gifted and talented education in the Metro Nashville school system until her retirement. She shared her love for learning and reading with students for 30 years and continued to influence students both as a tutor and volunteer later in her life.
Visitation Wednesday March 27th from five until eight o’clock in the evening at Woodlawn Roesch Patton Funeral Home. Second visitation Thursday March 28th from ten thirty until eleven thirty in the morning, funeral will begin at eleven thirty in the morning in Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall. Burial following Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Metropolitan Nashville Public Library or White County Public Library.
