Bobby Sutton Mason, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and mighty man of God, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025 at the age of 96.
Born on July 28, 1929, Bob lived a life marked by faith, service, and love for his family and community. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Mamie Evelyn Grindley with whom he shared 55 years of marriage until her passing in 2010. Together they built a family rooted in faith and love.
Bob is survived by his children David Mason, Leigh Ann Jones (Mike), and Mark Mason (Dee); his cherished grandchildren Shannon Banks (Stefan), Will Jones (Shannon), Sutton Mason, and Cooper Mason; and his treasured great-grandchildren Hank and Mimi Banks and Lily and Wyatt Jones.
A graduate of David Lipscomb, Bob dedicated his life to shaping and inspiring young people. He began his career as a high school coach and went on to impact generations through his leadership and encouragement. His passion for faith and athletics was evident in his remarkable 58 years of service on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Board of Directors. He was also one of the founders of Belmont Church on Music Row and served faithfully on the board of The Bridge Ministry.
Bob proudly served his country in the Korean War and continued his service in the National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. His discipline, integrity, and commitment to others were hallmarks of both his military career and personal life.
In addition to ministry and military service, Bob was active in athletics as a respected basketball referee in both the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) during the 1950s and 1960s. He was also a loyal fan and supporter of Lipscomb University athletics, rarely missing the chance to attend games and cheer on the Bisons.
Bob was a faithful member of Brentwood Hills Church of Christ, where his devotion to the Lord and his love for others shone brightly. Above all, he will be remembered as a man of deep faith who loved the Lord, his family, and his community. His legacy of service, devotion, and kindness will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.
A private family burial with full military honors will precede a Celebration of Life, which will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ. Visitation will take place from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Bridge Ministry, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or Lipscomb University Athletics in his honor.
