Charles Hayes Cooney, age 81 of Nashville, passed away on Tuesday, June 05, 2018 following a brief illness. He was born on April 25, 1937 to the late Annie Lee and Robert G. Cooney. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by brother, Robert G. Cooney, Jr.
Surviving family includes wife, Patsy Mercer Cooney; daughter, Susan Stumb Cooney; son, Charles Hayes Cooney, Jr.; step-daughters, Mercer Leggett and Amy Leggett Bass. Hayes was also the loving step-grandfather to Polly Bass, Edie Bass, and Jack Bass, IV.
A native Nashvillian, Hayes attended Parmer School, Montgomery Bell Academy, Vanderbilt University, and Vanderbilt School of Law. He held the position of Chief Deputy in the Tennessee State Attorney General’s office for 15 years before joining the law firm Watkins, McNeilly where he specialized in medical malpractice defense. He enjoyed a very fulfilling life in law for over 50 years.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 7th at 3:00pm at Mount Olivet Cemetery with Dr. Ben Jordan officiating.
