Dan graduated from H.G. Hill Elementary, Montgomery Bell Academy (1971) and Vanderbilt
University (1975). At Vanderbilt, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and earned a Bachelor
of Arts in economics and business.
Dan played tennis in high school and college, and along with doubles partner, Whit Whitson, was a
nationally-ranked junior tennis player. In 1965, Dan and Whit won the Southern Open and Southern
Closed in doubles, ranking fifth nationally. Dan joked “we had a lot of fun, saw a lot of cities, played
together until college, but peaked a little early because 1965 was our best year, at age hard twelve.”
Dan worked for seventeen years at Third National Bank and SunTrust Bank as a loan officer, credit
information officer, and branch manager. Later, he worked for ten years as treasurer for Global
Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation tied to different ministries and missionaries.
Dan is remembered for his easy smile, soft-spoken nature, strong faith, kindness, and devotion to
others. An avid sports fan, his favorite pastimes included cheering on the Predators, Titans, and
Commodores with his sons.
Dan is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Liza) Reynolds Buttrey, his sons, John Bramlette
Buttrey (Marcie) and Stephen Lytle Buttrey, and his granddaughters, Elowyn May Buttrey, Josephine
June Buttrey, and Vivienne April Buttrey. He is also survived by his siblings, Dianne Buttrey Wild
(Skip), Jack Denson Buttrey (John), Dana Elisabeth Croswhite (Eric), and Anne Bramlette Hawkins
(Kenny), his sister-in-law, Anne Trabue Buttrey, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is
preceded in death by his brother, David Roscoe Buttrey, Jr. The family expresses deep gratitude to the fifth floor nurses, therapists, and doctors at St. Thomas Midtown who cared for Dan with compassion in his final months.
