

David C. George died March 7, 2021 in Nashville, of complications due to prostate cancer. He was born January 12, 1938, in Monroe, Louisiana, to Evans David George and Muriel Stevenson George. The family moved to Texas in 1949, and he graduated from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard Payne University and the Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Theology degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He served as assistant to the pastor at First Baptist Church, Shreveport, Louisiana, as pastor of First Baptist Church of Stuttgart, Arkansas, and as pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church of Nashville, for thirty years, until his retirement in 2006, when he was named Pastor Emeritus.
He met his wife of more than 60 years, Peggy Ratliff of San Antonio, Texas, while in college, and they married in 1960. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a wise, kind, and encouraging presence in the lives of those who knew him.
He especially enjoyed preaching. He was an avid reader and a student of Scripture, theology, philosophy, history, and literature. He was a member of the International John Bunyan Society. He amassed a large library and collected and sold used and collectible books, including many rare editions of The Pilgrim’s Progress. He enjoyed travel throughout the United States and Europe with his wife, Peggy. They were long-time participants in the fitness programs of the Green Hills YMCA.
He served as a member of the Christian Life Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, a member of the Executive Board of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, and a trustee of Belmont University. He was a member of the board of the Pastoral Counseling Centers of Tennessee. Beginning in 1990 he was affiliated with, and active in, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. In retirement he was an intentional interim pastor of churches in Tennessee and Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Ratliff George, a daughter, Jennifer Low (John) of Waco, Texas, two sons in Nashville, Andrew George, and Michael George (Isabelle), three grandchildren, Lindsey Low (Andrew), Madison Low, Michael’s son, Sébastien George, and a brother, Steven C. George of Centennial, Colorado.
A private memorial service will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 11:00 am. The service will stream live on the Immanuel Baptist Church Nashville Facebook page.
