

Doris Rutherford O'Neil died on April 18, 2020, in Nashville, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late James Kenneth Rutherford and Mildred Anderson Rutherford of Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York. She was the sister of the late Jane Rutherford Johnson and Nancy Rutherford Gaster and sister-in-law of the late Ed Johnson and Milt Gaster.
Born in New York City on August 3, 1928, she grew up in Rockville Centre. She graduated from Roanoke College, Salem, Virginia, majoring in Economics and Business Administration. After working in Manhattan for Mobil Oil Company for two years, she accepted a civilian position with the Department of the Army in Stuttgart, Germany. This was a wonderful opportunity to travel throughout Germany and other countries in Europe. Doris valued the experience not only for visiting other places, but meeting so many people who became good friends. Upon completion of the assignment, she returned to New York, worked for Shell Oil Company in Public Relations as coordinator of the Women's Travel Program. She maintained her interest in travel all her life.
Doris and Henry O'Neil were married in 1957. The parents of three sons, the family relocated to Nashville in 1967 when he became regional manager for American Airlines. After their youngest son went to college, she worked for the Tennessee State Legislature in the Calendar and Rules Committee of the House of Representatives. Doris was assistant to Representative Pete Phillips until he retired, then assisted Rep. John Hood. She retired in 2005 after 20 years of dedicated service.
Doris was an active volunteer in the community. A member of the Friends of the Nashville Symphony, Opera, and Ballet. She also avidly supported Hillwood Garden Club, Woman's Club, Vanderbilt Bridge Center, English Speaking Union, Hillwood Country Club. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by three sons: David O'Neil (Janet Nichols), their children Henry and Helene; Douglas O'Neil (Connie Montgomery) their children, Clare (Adrian) Klos, Alison, and Leslie; Henry James O'Neil OBE, London, England; three great grandchildren, Charlotte Nicole Klos, Grace Elizabeth Klos, Elliot Douglas Galindo. She leaves dear nieces, nephews and friends with whom she shared many happy moments.
