(July 22, 1923 – July 20, 2017)
Dorothy Cottier Jones of Nashville TN died July 20 at Woodcrest Health Center in Nashville TN.
Dorothy was the youngest of 7 children of Flora Belle and Hugh Montgomery Cottier, and grew up in Auburn Alabama. She graduated from Auburn University (then the Alabama Polytechnic Institute) with a BS in Home Economics in 1944 and worked as a home demonstration agent. She and S. Alfred (Al) Jones married in January 1945 and following the end of World War II, they embarked on a life together that took them to Tennessee, Texas and Pennsylvania with Al’s work with Alcoa. They had been married 66 years when Al died in 2011.
Her faith, her family, her many friends and her much-loved pets were Dorothy’s greatest joys. She enjoyed gardening, playing duplicate bridge, and baking her special sour cream pound cakes for all occasions. In addition to her husband Al, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her 4 brothers and 2 sisters, and an infant daughter.
Dorothy is survived by daughter Leslie Higgins (Charles) of Nashville and son Hugh Jones (Carol) of Coral Springs, FL, as well as grandchildren Melinda Higgins Louden (Jay) of San Antonio, TX, and Dylan Jones, Nova Jones and Griffin Jones of Coral Springs, FL.
The staff at Woodcrest Health Center provided gentle, compassionate, exceptional care to Dorothy. The family is so grateful for the countless things they did, day in and day out, to provide support and comfort to all of us. We will miss their hugs and smiling faces.
Graveside service and burial will take place at the Jones family plot in Newton Alabama.
In celebration of Dorothy’s life, the family encourages gifts in her memory to the Nashville Humane Association, 213 Oceola Avenue, Nashville TN 37209 (www.nashvillehumane.org), the Employee Appreciation Fund of Blakeford, 11 Burton Hills Boulevard, Nashville TN 37215, or the charity of one’s choice.
