

Dorothy B. Smith, 84, of Nashville passed away peacefully at her home on December 19, 2020. She was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky on September 14, 1936. She was the wife of Dr. Raphael F. Smith III for 61 years, who passed in July of 2019.
She was preceded in death by her mother Annie Maude Brown (1986), father Ivan Lloyd Boren (1987) and brother Robert Lloyd Boren (2008).
Dorothy, called Dot by her friends and Dottie by her grandchildren, was a devoted mother, grandmother, animal lover, and small business owner. She co-founded Pepper Patch Inc. with long-time friend Rachel McAllister. Pepper Patch started as a specialty food company in Franklin, TN making fancy pepper jellies, pickles, candies and the Tennessee Tipsy Cake made with Jack Daniel’s Whiskey.
Dot grew the company to a thriving business with a bakery and candy kitchen in Lynchburg, TN which was a favorite stop on the Jack Daniel’s distillery tour.
Dorothy is survived by her four children Raphael F. Smith IV (Sarah Lynn), Stephen A. Smith (Libby), Peter H. Smith (Amy) and Anne S. Shifflet (Greg). She has nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Mary Smotherman for her five excellent years of dedicated service providing in home care for both Dorothy and Raphael III.
A private ceremony will be held for her after Christmas. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Nashville Humane Association at https://nashvillehumane.org .
