Douglas Arthur Nabors (Dan) was born on October 5, 1925. He and his wife Dorothy (Dot) made their home in Donelson, TN, where they raised their four children. Many years later, they built a home in Mt. Juliet, TN, and resided there until 2013. Dan peacefully died at the age of 91 on September 1, 2017, in Crossville, TN, where he and his wife have been living since June 2016. In WWII, Dan served in United States Navy, on the battleship South Dakota as a Seaman 2nd Class, fighting in Okinawa. After returning from the war, he met and married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Hooper. Dan played baseball in Ashland City and planned to move into the minor leagues, but passed on the opportunity as he didn’t want to be away from his wife and family. He worked at the United Methodist Publishing House for 35+ years before retiring in 1985. Dan leaves his wife of 69 years, Dorothy—a retired nurse--and their three children: Cindy Nabors Phillips and her husband, John, of Crossville, TN; Dick Alan Nabors and his wife, Lisa of Herndon, VA; Gary Nabors and Zunilda Conforte, of Miami, FL. His daughter, Sharron Brown, predeceased him in 2015, leaving his son-in-law, Elliott Brown of Hermitage, TN. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Dan was an active member of the Mt. Juliet Church of Christ and participated in many missionary activities over the years. He was a Scout Master throughout the time his sons were involved in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed planning and leading many troop activities. Dan was an avid bowler and celebrated his high scoring game of 299 with friends and family. He also loved the game of golf and valued the time he was able to spend with friends on the golf course. One of his other enjoyments was traveling abroad with his wife, Dot. Some of their destinations included Spain, Germany, England and Hawaii. Over the years, they also enjoyed square dancing and playing cards with close friends. As a private man, Dan’s greatest achievement was creating a supportive, loving, and devoted family. A visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017, from eleven o’clock to one o’clock in the afternoon, at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home. Dan Nabors will be buried immediately after visitation at one o’clock at Woodlawn Memorial Park with graveside service and military honors. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Wounded Warrior Project or charity of choice.
