Dudley Brown Morgan White, age 95, of Nashville, TN, the matriarch of the Morgan and White families, died peacefully on October 16, 2026. After driving herself home from her beloved mountains of North Carolina, she suffered a sudden illness and went to our Lord encircled by her family. Dudley lived a life full of joy, friendship, and giving.
She was the daughter of the late Frances Dudley Brown and William Charles Foskett Brown, who met when he landed a plane on the Belle Meade golf course, and the granddaughter of the late Clara Golde Foskett Brown and Charles Sumner Brown, a beloved Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University, and the late Claudia Laura Martin Dudley and Richard Houston Dudley, Jr., President of Gray and Dudley Company. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 40 years, Walter McNairy Morgan, Jr. and her second husband, John Warner White.
Dudley lived her early years on the 23rd block of West End Ave. and attended Peabody Demonstration School and then Ward-Belmont Preparatory School. At Vanderbilt University, she was a leader in the Women’s Student Government, the Honorary Publications Society, and the Athenians, and Secretary of Kappa Alpha Theta. She achieved membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1953.
Dudley lived by her family’s principle of giving back to the community that has given to you.
With her strong presence and wise decision-making, she presided over the Junior League of Nashville, the Women of St. George’s Episcopal Church, the Lawn and Garden Fair and the Symphony Royale. While Regent of the Ladies Hermitage Association, she helped raise $4.5 million for major restorations and, alongside President Ronald Reagan, placed a wreath at President Andrew Jackson’s tomb.
Her father instilled in her a love of gardens, and she served as President of The Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee, Deer Park Garden Club and The Garden Club of Nashville. She also served The Garden Club of America in numerous roles, and enjoyed hosting tours of her splendid gardens, which her father originally planted. She and her first husband Walter also loved Cheekwood, where she served on the Board, and remained as an Honorary Board member. In 1968, along with her dear friend Govan White, she chaired the Swan Ball benefiting Cheekwood.
Dudley believed firmly in the power of education, often heard saying “education is one of the best gifts you can give someone.” When Ward-Belmont suddenly closed, her parents rallied with a small group of community leaders to start The Harpeth Hall School. Dudley continued that support, serving on the Board and continuing as an Honorary member. She also served as Vice-Chairman of The Ensworth School Board. Dudley was most proud to be a member of the Board of Trust of Vanderbilt University for over 25 years, serving on the Executive, the Medical Center, the Building and Grounds, and the Student Affairs committees. She remained a Trustee Emerita.
When Dudley was three, her parents discovered the beauty and special relationships that bloom during the summers in Linville, NC. Her parents were founding members of the resort, and Dudley became a leader and true pillar of the Linville community until her death. Serving as Chairman of the All Saints Episcopal Church Committee and the Linville Foundation exemplified her love for the local community.
Over 93 summers, she had countless adventures on the mountains and rivers surrounding Linville. Picnics were a favorite, and the always highly anticipated Wee Dram party. A 4-time Club Champion in golf at Belle Meade, she played in Linville well into her 80’s and encouraged her grandchildren to follow suit. With second husband John, she found the joy of Boca Grande, FL, a winter haven for many of both mountain and hometown friends.
If you spent time with Dudley, you got the joy of a party, laughter from an indomitable spirit and the inspiration of a determination unwilling to give hurdles a second glance. She treasured her life-long friendships and was the glue that held many groups together. She was a loving mother, a larger-than-life grandmother, and she loved gathering her family for celebrations on a grand scale, with unwavering traditions.
Dudley is survived by her sons, Walter McNairy Morgan III, M.D. (Anne) and William Dudley Morgan (Lisa); and six grandchildren, Charles Houston Morgan (Amy), Katherine Dudley Morgan, Elizabeth McKay Morgan Coode (Christopher), John Carver Morgan (Lauren), Margaret Sumner Morgan Smith (Brian), and Nan Wallace Morgan LoParco (Matt). She is also survived by her stepchildren Margaret White Ratcliff, Elizabeth White McDonald, John Warner White, Jr. (Brenda) and Govan Davidson White (Barby); and seven step-grandchildren: Garrett Bateman Ratcliff (Krista), Margaret Lindsley Ratcliff, Hunter McDonald IV (Vicki), John White McDonald (Annalisa), Margaret Lindsley White Viola (Joey), Govan Davidson White, Jr., and Richard Warner White. She also leaves behind her 24 beloved great grandchildren and step-great grandchildren as well as her nephew Gordon Powell Publow, niece Jinksie Publow Harris, and her God-daughter Catherine Robinson Eberle.
The family extends loving thanks to those who met her coming and going: Annie Woods, Sandra McCauley, Oneka House, Don Tyler, Anna Ruth and David Forbes, Debbie Winebarger, Brandi Forbes, and the amazing staff of LGC.
