Elizabeth Miller Corney

Elizabeth Miller Corney, affectionately known as "Libby" (and “Bee” by her grandchildren), passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by her loving family. She was 92 years old.

Libby was born on December 22, 1933, in Clifton Forge, Virginia, and spent her childhood in Talcott, West Virginia, living on her maternal grandparents' farm. Libby graduated from Talcott High School in 1951 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, in 1955. During her college years, she was an active member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and served as chapter president during her senior year.

Following graduation, Libby began her teaching career in New Castle, Delaware, before relocating to Charlottesville, Virginia. It was there that she met Robert “Bob” Tyler Corney, then a first-year medical student. The two were married on June 14, 1958, beginning a partnership that would span over 68 years. Their children Susan and Robert were born in Charlottesville. After leaving Virginia, the family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, before relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1972 when Bob joined the psychiatric faculty at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Libby devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her family, and volunteering in the communities where they lived. She served as President of the University School of Nashville (USN) Parent Association in the late 1970s and played a pivotal role in helping save the school during a challenging period. Libby later served on the USN Board of Directors from 1981 to 1984. In addition, Libby dedicated countless volunteer hours to the Episcopal Diocese's This-n-That Shop, serving as its president for many years. Libby was an active member of Questers and a devoted member of Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, where she served on the Flower Guild.

Libby was a woman of remarkable creativity, taste, and generosity. She loved entertaining family and friends, and her home reflected her impeccable eye for style and her gift for making others feel welcome. She and Bob had a wall of books and spent many nights reading together in their library. Perhaps nothing brought Libby greater joy than her family. She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and took immense pride in their accomplishments.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvina Agnes Wyant Miller and Hugh Clifton Miller (Nora), her sister Jane Wyant Miller Wheeling and her husband Joseph Lindsay Wheeling. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Tyler Corney; her children, Susan Tyler Corney Van Allen and Robert Blair Corney (Shannon); her grandchildren, Katherine McKendrick Van Allen, Phoebe Halsey Van Allen, Edwin Blair Corney, and Clare Elizabeth Corney; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Alive Hospice and Abe's Garden Communities for their exceptional care and support. Special thanks are offered to Doris, whose loving care, companionship, and devotion brought comfort and dignity to Libby's final years.

A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. A memorial service celebrating Libby's life will be announced and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Libby's memory may be made to Alive Hospice, This-n-That Shop, or Second Harvest Food Bank.
