Mrs. Young was born on February 3, 1930 in Dallas, Texas to her parents, Lovick Pierce V and Florence Couch Pierce. Her father was the President and Publisher of the Methodist Publishing House and founder and first general manager of the Cokesbury Book Store founded in Dallas. After moving from Highland Park High School in Dallas, she graduated from Ward Belmont Academy in Nashville. She started her college education at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, and she was very proud of her lineage as a great granddaughter of George Foster Pierce, the founder of Wesleyan. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1952.
She worked as a travel agent for Matson Steam Lines at the famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, HI where she met her future husband who served there in the Army. In 1957 she married Andrew W. Young Jr. of Osceola, Arkansas. While finishing his degree at the University of Arkansas, she taught elementary school until they decided to start a family. The Youngs followed his career from Arkansas to Houston, Texas where they moved in 1966. She moved back to Nashville in 1994 to live in her family home. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lovick Pierce VI.
Mrs. Young always loved her children and grandchildren, and she enjoyed supporting her Tennessee Titans, who she followed since they were the Houston Oilers in her former hometown. Anyone who met her knew her as GG and she loved that name of endearment.
Mrs. Young is survived by her son W. Pierce Young of Dallas, TX and his wife Dalene Owens Young and their son Preston Pierce Young and daughter Michelle Renee Young; her daughter Andrea Young Bessette of Murfreesboro, TN and her husband E. Michael Bessette and their daughter Carter Michelle Hannah (husband Benjamin Chester Hannah) and son Lance Michael Martin; and her son Kern Braxton Young of Collierville, TN and his wife Wendy Roach Young and their daughter Ella Elizabeth Young and sons Braxton Foster Young and Lovick Waldren Young.
Mrs. Young will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Her family and friends will have a celebration of life at a future date.
