
STEWART, Gladys Carroll, age 93, passed away suddenly May 25, 2012 following a long illness. She was born in Chattanooga, TN on April 5, 1919. Her parents were Judge James Martin Carroll and Stella Tatum Carroll of Dade Co., Georgia. Married almost 65 years, she is survived by her husband, David Marshall Stewart; son James Marshall Stewart, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her sister, Mary Jo Dennis. She attended schools in Chattanooga graduating from the University of Chattanooga. She attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she briefly taught and received her masters degree in Botany at the University of Cincinnati. She first worked at the New York Botanical Gardens later moved to Washington, DC working for George Washington University, then for the Office of the QuarterMaster General of the Army 1949-1957. She moved to Nashville with her husband and son in June 1960. She became very closely associated with the Tennessee Gesneriad Society, Meade Valley Garden Club, and the Dixie-Dollers. When younger, she volunteered for her church, Belle Meade United Methodist. She was a joy to all who knew her, living in accordance with 1 Corinthians 13, and will be remembered for her gentle kindness, good humor, and friendship. Funeral Services will be held at three o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 31st of May, 2012 in Woodlawn’s South Mausoleum with visitation held one hour prior the service. Entombment to follow.
