Guy Roger Vanderpool, 86, passed away on October 21, 2019. He was proceeded in death by his mother, Hallye Young Vanderpool; his father, Guy Gibson Vanderpool; and two nephews, Jay Vanderpool and Reed Vanderpool. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joanne Edmondson Vanderpool; his daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and George Anglin of Nashville; his son, Guy Clifton Vanderpool of Fort Worth, TX; five grandchildren, Grace Anne V. Hargrove, Andrew Anglin, Mary Katherine Vanderpool, Hallye Claire Anglin, and Guy Maxwell Vanderpool; his great-grand daughter, Abra Elizabeth Hargrove; his three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Harold Y. Vanderpool of Austin, TX, Drs. John P. and Beverly Vanderpool of Galveston, TX, and Dr. and Mrs. Roy E. Vanderpool of Fort Smith, AR; his brother and sister-in-law, Molly and Thomas Edmondson of Brentwood, TN. Other survivors include nieces and nephews; Jon Vanderpool, Katherine V. Provost, Bryan Vanderpool, Scott Vanderpool, Dr. Douglas Vanderpool, Sue Ann Newman, Jim Vanderpool; and Molly E. Rollins, Millie E. Vanderpool, and Thomas Edmondson, Jr; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Guy was born on August 19, 1933, in Dallas, TX, and graduated from Midland HS, Midland, TX. He studied history at Harding University and earned a MA in Diplomatic History from George Washington University. After graduating from Harding in 1956, he was drafted and joined the US Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps. After his term in the army he worked as an analyst for the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland, where he spent his career for 35 years. While a Department of Defense employee, he served under 9 US presidents and received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award for “distinguished and unselfish service, loyalty and devotion.” After retiring in 1996, he and Joanne moved to Nashville, where he started a second career teaching. As a visiting professor at Lipscomb University he taught the history of Russia, China, and international relations. He was a beloved teacher, and his students continued to stay in touch with him through the years.
Guy loved the natural world and admiring God’s creation. He was a sportsman who admired the vastness of West Texas, the beaches of Hawaii, and the woodlands of Maryland and Tennessee. His was a constant student of history and enjoyed great music and spending time with family and friends.
Guy and Joanne are active members in the Woodmont Hills Church. As a life-long teacher, Guy taught countless Sunday school classes at the Bowie Church of Christ in Bowie, Maryland, where he served as an elder. Following his commitment to faith and service, he served in many capacities at churches in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Hawaii, and Nashville.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be on Wednesday at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home from four o’clock until seven o’clock and on Thursday morning from ten o’clock until eleven o’clock at Woodmont Hills Church. A Celebration of Life will follow at Woodmont Hills on Thursday at eleven o’clock.
