Harold Raymond Dyer was the only child of Raymond Gabriel Dyer and Bertha Knibbs Dyer, born in 1923 in Stillwater, NY. As an avid athlete, Harold was only off the field to play his cornet in the Stillwater Band. He had a natural ease with numbers and mechanics and left New York to join the U S Army Signal Corp where he served his country as a high-speed radio operator on Guadalcanal in the South Pacific during WWII. Returning home, he married his favorite gal Frances Jones Dyer to whom he was devoted for 66 years.
Harold worked for McWhorter and Franklin Engineering Firm in Nashville for several years before joining the U S Corp of Engineers where he worked for nearly 30 years designing dams for energy and new lighting for the Nashville International Airport. Harold was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Nashville where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and basketball coach to many high school boys over the years. He has requested memorials go to the Good News Scholarship Fund, care of the First Baptist Church, Nashville TN. As a Vanderbilt Alum, Harold was a die-hard Commodore and served his alma mater faithfully as a member of the Commodore Club. Many friends remember going through his gate at Vanderbilt Memorial Gymnasium week after week, year after year to give their game ticket to Harold.
Harold is survived by his loving wife Frances and three beloved children: Carole Dyer Williams of Franklin, TN, Daniel Charles Dyer of Canton, OH, and Linda Dyer Morris of Mt. Juliet, TN. He had eight grandchildren who were the delight of his soul and six great-grandchildren to boast over. He was known in his younger days to be a favorite uncle to his seven nieces and nephews as he was always ready to play ball and was quick with a joke. His cousin Billy Knibbs still lives in Harold’s historic boyhood home in Stillwater on the bank of the Hudson River. He was a blessing to his family and the finest of men. We celebrate the victory he has won through the cross of Jesus Christ and are comforted to know we will be with him again one day. Hallelujah!
