He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 62 years, Margaret R. Gaddes, and his parents Walter and Emma Gaddes. Sisters who also preceded him were Pernie Colley (Ray), Sue Johnson (Cecil), Clarice Knight, and Lillian Lockwood (Guy). Brothers included Walter (Ola), Clarence (Beatrice), Ardell, Bobby and Tim Gaddes.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (John) Ewing and Annette (Neal) Allison, as well as his beloved grandchildren, John R. Ewing, Kari Ewing, Courtney (Sterling) Crawford and Brian Allison.
His surviving brother is Howard Gaddes of Watertown, TN.
Mr. Gaddes was a graduate of Bellevue High School and Falls Business College. He also attended Middle Tennessee State University.
He was a veteran of World War II, having spent 32 months in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, he saw service in both Europe and Pacific campaigns.
His career spanned 50 years with the Tennessee Book Company. During that time, he was named as the company’s president, and served all of the public schools in Tennessee with textbook orders, adoptions and deliveries. He is remembered fondly by many business associates throughout Tennessee.
He was also a member of American Legion Post 5, and several World War II Landing Craft reunion groups. He stayed in contact with many of his World War II shipmates.
In past years, he was active in several civic groups, including the Civitan Club and the board of Merci Homes, a foundation for mentally challenged young men and women. In addition, he was a member West End Church of Christ.
Funeral Services will be held eleven-thirty in the morning, Monday, March 3, 2014 with Phil Kinzer officiating. Interment will immediately follow from Woodlawn Memorial Park’s Everlasting Life Garden.
Serving as pallbearers are Sterling Crawford, Brian Allison, John R. Ewing and Neal Allison.
The family will receive friends from two o’clock until 6, Sunday, March 2, 2014 and one hour prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.
