On July 19, 1959, in Iasi, Romania, Hugo married Hilda, his beloved wife of 67 years. He went on to earn a graduate degree in Chemical Engineering and built a distinguished career in industry, ultimately serving as Chief Operating Officer for Akzo Nobel in Brazil, from which he retired in 2003.
More than anything, Hugo was a family man. He was the most loving husband, father, and grandfather — a man who always put his family first and sacrificed everything for them. Those who knew him remember him as the gentlest and most selfless human being they ever met. He was keenly intelligent, quick-witted, and possessed an unmatched gift for humor; his jokes and stories captivated everyone he encountered, and he was loved by all who crossed his path. He dedicated his life to his family's happiness and security, and did so without ever complaining.
In his free time, Hugo delighted in classical music, reading, history, and the game of chess. He cherished the hours spent with his grandchildren and their dogs, and he loved good food and traveling the world with those dearest to him.
Hugo is survived by his wife, Hilda Mayer; his daughter, Ingrid Mayer; his son-in-law, Ricardo Fonseca; and his grandchildren, Laura Fonseca and Brandon Fonseca. He was preceded in death by his parents, Baruch Moises Mayer and Jeannette Mayer.
A service celebrating Hugo's life will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 1:00 PM CDT at Congregation Micah, 2001 Old Hickory Blvd, Brentwood, TN 37027.
Hugo will be remembered for his warmth, his wisdom, and his laughter — and for the deep, quiet love he gave so freely to those around him. He will be profoundly missed.”
