James attended Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN, and graduated from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management—an education that reflected the steady determination and thoughtful care he brought to the responsibilities of everyday life.
Enlisting into the United States Army during the Vietnam War, James served his time and was honorably discharged. That faithful sense of duty carried through the decades that followed. He worked more than forty years doing body work in the trucking industry, known for being hard-working and loyal—someone who showed up, did the job right, and kept going with quiet resilience. Even after retirement, James could rarely resist tinkering around with vehicles, finding comfort in the familiar rhythm of hands-on work.
Above all, James was devoted to his family. He was a good father, and nothing delighted him more than time with his grandsons, who lovingly called him “Paw-Paw.” He carried his love in practical ways—through presence, consistency, and the kind of steadfast support that never needed to be announced to be felt.
James found joy in simple pleasures and shared moments: fishing and hunting with his son, Jamie; a round of golf; a game of darts; and cheering on the Tennessee Titans and NASCAR racing. In each of these, those who knew him best saw the same beloved steadiness—an attentive spirit, a thoughtful word, and a heart that stayed true. He was also proud of his continued connection to fellow veterans, remaining an active member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars).
James was preceded in death by his father, James Calloway Campbell, Sr.; his mother, Cora Muncie Campbell; his sisters AnnTrese Campbell and Sharon Petruzelli; his step-son, Charles Avery; and his loving wife, Kathleen Campbell. He is survived by his son, Jamie Campbell; his step-daughter, Carri Johnson (Weldon); his grandson, Jacob Campbell; his step-grandsons, Nick Follis, Gage Johnson, and Devin Johnson; his great--great-grandchildren, Heaven Follis and Wyatt Gilbert; and a sister, Patricia Campbell. James also leaves behind a host of extended family members and friends.
