

James “Coach” Edward Barrick, born November 7, 1926, in Nashville, passed away on March 18, 2017. Preceded in death by his mother, Marvalea Smith Barrick; father, James E. Barrick, Sr.; and brother, Jerry Donald Barrick. Survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Dorothy Ann Strange Barrick; son, Robin Barrick; daughter, Sarah Lea Barrick; grandsons, Luke Barrick and Ryan Barrick; daughter-in-law, Kim Barrick; nephew, Jon Barrick; niece, Kathy Barrick; and cousins, Dorothy Hindman, Martha Ann Caldwell, Anne Stephens, and Richard Elliott. His family moved to his mother’s family farm when he was four. He graduated from Giles County High School and received his B.S. degree from Tennessee Tech. He earned M.A., M.Ed., and PhD at Peabody College and Vanderbilt University. He also attended the University of the South, University of North Carolina and Ohio State University. He played football at Tennessee Tech, University of the South (Navy V-5) and at UNC in Navy preflight under Paul “Bear” Bryant. Volunteering for military service with parental consent at 17, Jim was a Naval Aviation Cadet at UNC when WWII ended. He met his wife Dorothy at Tennessee Tech after the war and they were married September 26, 1946. He was a teacher, coach, and principal in Nashville public schools for 36 years. He was head coach in football, basketball, and baseball at Howard High School from 1948-1965, winning NIL championships in all three sports. He was principal at Highland Heights, Goodlettsville High School, and executive principal at Glencliff High School when he retired in 1982. He also served as adjunct professor at TSU, Peabody College, and Belmont University. He was the educational consultant for the planning of Whites Creek High School and the literacy director for the TN Department of Education. He received education fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the Danforth Foundation. An active member of Belmont United Methodist Church since 1949, he served as a teacher, volunteer, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. Jim was a member of the Board of Directors of the TN Teachers Credit Union for 35 years and he was past president of the Nashville Interscholastic League. Coach was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman. His lifelong hobbies included golf, fishing, hunting, and raising cattle on the family farm in Giles County. Honorary Pall Bearers are members of his athletic teams at Howard High School. Visitation will be held from noon to one-thirty in the afternoon on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Belmont United Methodist Church, with service following at one-thirty, also at the church. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Belmont United Methodist Church.
