

MCCANN, James A.- Husband, Father, WWll Veteran passed away October 9, 2012. Born in Newark, N.J. June 27, 1926. Preceded in death by parents Andrew and Rose McCann and Ellen and Thomas Hardy, brother Edward, sister Margaret Landers and daughter, Shannon. Jim is survived by his wife Deborah, sister Mary Hughes, son James P (Jim) McCann (Jessica), daughter Christine Donnelly (John / Bubba), daughter Kathleen Morales (Michael), Thomas Hughes (Pam), Grandchildren James A McCann ll, Michael Lariosa, Paul McCann (Jamie), Jack McCann, Mark McCann, John (Jay) Donnelly (Kelli), Ryan Donnelly (Erin), Amanda Morales, Matthew Morales, Margaret Morales, MacKenzie Morales and Great Grandchildren John P. Donnelly lll, James Holder Donnelly, Payton Marie McCann and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim proudly served his country during World War Two in the U.S. Navy at Middlebury College and on the USS Saratoga at the battles of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Tarawa and Iwo Jima. Jim had a distinguished career in men's retail footwear and clothing as President of Johnston & Murphy Retail and later as General Manager of Lansky's Department stores in Memphis. After retirement at age 67, he found a new career substitute teaching in the Dickson County School System, teaching Latin, English and Adult Education in every school in the county. Eighteen months before his death, Jim created the Overbrook School Poetry Club for second through eighth graders. The students were a source of pride and delight to him. Jim attended Mass daily and treasured his friendship with the residents of Mary Queen of Angels, where he was known for his sense of humor and for being the ultimate raconteur. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Charles Daniels, the staff and administration of Mary Queen of Angels, Esther Hagan and the other wonderful people at Alive Hospice. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be directed in Mr. McCann's name to the Father Ryan Tuition Assistance Fund, 700 Norwood Drive, Nashville, TN 37204. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (535 Sneed Rd. W, Franklin, TN) and a Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthews. Burial will be at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
