Joan Mary Strobel, born May 1, 1929, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 2, 2025. She was one of six children of Robert William and Mary Langdon Strobel. She is pre-deceased by her parents; brothers Robert, Raymond (Bertie Greer Strobel), Eugene (Katherine Bronn Strobel), Carl Strobel and an infant sister, Rosemary Strobel; and nephews Raymond and Peter Strobel. She is survived by eight nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews and their children.
Ms. Strobel attended Cathedral Grade School and St. Bernard Academy. She graduated from Peabody College with a degree in Elementary Education and went on to teach in East Berlin, then part of the Soviet bloc, for the U. S. military. Joan spent several years teaching and traveling in Europe and brought home her first of many VW Beetles from Germany. After her stint overseas, she served as a first-grade teacher at Bordeaux Elementary until her retirement in 1984.
Joan was a devoted care giver to her mother and brother Carl at the end of their lives. She devoted hundreds of hours as a volunteer at Room In The Inn and was an unceasing advocate of their mission.
Classical Music was her passion, and she sang in the Cathedral choir for many years alongside her brother Robert, the choir director. A long-time Pavarotti enthusiast, she also attended local opera performances and invited friends and family to join her. The radio was always tuned to WPLN when you stepped into her home or her apartment at Mary, Queen of Angels, and the space was flooded with beautiful sounds. Joan often stopped and exclaimed, “Isn’t that wonderful” when hearing something she loved.
A lifelong member of the Nashville Catholic community, Joan cultivated many friends and found great joy in being an active part of that community. In the spirit of that commitment, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Room In The Inn or a charity of your choosing.
Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18th at the Cathedral Catholic Church; followed by a Funeral service at 10:00 a.m.
