JoAnn Hulfish Patterson

Nashville, Tennessee – Age 78, passed away peacefully at home on July 1, 2019. JoAnn was born October 9, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia. She grew up in Arlington, Virginia and moved to Nashville in 1958 to attend David Lipscomb College where she graduated with a major in English. In November 1962, she became the assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Alumni & Development at Vanderbilt University, Madison Sarratt, until his death in April 1978. JoAnn actively supported Cheekwood, American Cancer Society, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, Nashville Symphony, Second Harvest, American Red Cross, Lipscomb University, and Vanderbilt University. An active member of Woodmont Christian Church for more than 50 years, she served many different positions, including Sunday school teacher, CWF leader, and on the founding board of Woodmont Christian Preschool. In 1993, JoAnn returned to work at Vanderbilt University in the Office of General Counsel until her retirement in 2014.

JoAnn is survived by her children Thompson Brown Patterson, Jr. (Emmy) and Kathryn Donelson (Daniel), brother Bill Hulfish (Ann), five grandchildren, and eleven nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her parents James and Erma Lee Hulfish, brother Jim Hulfish, and her beloved son, James Gray Patterson.

The family wishes to thank Yovanda McGee, Angela Sawyers, Shenita Sawyers, and LaTonya Boyd for their dedication and loving care of JoAnn.

Visitation will be on Sunday, July 7th, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Woodmont Christian Church. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 8th, 1:00 p.m. at Woodmont Christian Church, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Vanderbilt University, Lipscomb University, or Woodmont Christian Church.
