CARNES, Joe Shelvy-age 99, passed away after a brief illness on February 23, 2013. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Emma Ruth (Exum) Carnes. He is survived by son, Jerry W. (Lisa) Carnes and grandson, Jack Shelvy Carnes; brother, Lawrence (Eva) Carnes; niece, Sharon Carnes; niece, Sherrie (Jonathan) Blazer; nephew, Ron Exum and extended family in Nashville and Kentucky. Born in Russell County, Kentucky on February 2, 1914. Granduated from Berea College in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France and Germany. He worked primarily for National Stores Corporation in Nashville as an accountant and upon retirement operated a landscape business. Joe enjoyed bird hunting and was an avid golfer until age 94. Joe was a beloved husband, father, and extraordinary grandfather to Jack. Funeral service will be conducted on Thursday February 28, 2013 at eleven thirty a.m. in Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall, placement to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park where family and friends will serve as Pallbearers. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Wednesday evening from six to eight p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. The family expresses their sincere thanks to the staff at Belvedere Commons, Franklin, TN. In lieu of customary floral tributes donations may be made to the Carol Lynn Hall Scholarship Fund at David Lipscomb University or a charity of your choice.
