
SHUMAKER, John Gilman – Respected and Beloved Hillwood High School Chemistry and Physics Professor for nearly 40 years, passed away at the age of 85 on the 29th of April 2013. He was an alumnus of West End High School’s class of 1946, and earned his formal and graduate education at Vanderbilt Peabody College. He will be remembered for many achievements in his life and many hobbies, his favorite being a member of the NAWCC (National Watch and Clock Club), a member of the local Corvair club, and being accomplished in clock repairs and auto mechanics. Survived by loving wife of 52 years, Susan Holroyd Shumaker; four sons, John Gilman Shumaker, III, Frank Shelton Shumaker, James David (Joann) Shumaker, and Richard Andrew Shumaker; two grandchildren, Michelle and Charlotte Shumaker; and cousin, Lois Anne Koonce. He was a lifetime member at Belmont United Methodist Church and was a part of the choir there for over 50 years. A Celebration of Life service will be held there in the sanctuary at 21st and Acklen on Friday, the 3rd of May 2013 at three o’clock in the afternoon with Rev. Ken Edwards officiating. Entombment to follow at Woodlawn’s Cross Mausoleum. Friends are invited to gather with the family on Friday at the church for a time of remembrance and visitation beginning at one-thirty up until the time of service.
