Dr. Joseph Edward Hurt

Dr. Joseph Edward Hurt, age 89 passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on October 21, 2014. He is survived by wife of 64 years, Gay Hurt of Mt. Juliet, TN; daughter, Jayne (Randy) Hurt Bellows of Easton, Maryland and son, Randy (Joan Claiborne) Hurt of Lawrenceburg, TN; grandchildren, Carter Hurt and Ethan Hurt of Hermitage, TN and Paternal Nephew, Dr. Brixey (Elaine) Sheldon. Dr. Hurt was a graduate of Donelson Elementary and Donelson High School in Nashville, TN. After graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force to serve in WWII. He attended Dickinson College and graduated from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Hurt then attended the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis where he earned his M.D. He served on the faculty at Vanderbilt Medical School and practiced internal medicine in Nashville for 50 years. Dr. Hurt was a great lover of humanity, a loving faithful husband and father, loved by all who had the fortune and opportunity to know him . Gathering of family and friends will be on Thursday, October 23, 2014 from five thirty until eight o’clock at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 660 Thompson Lane Nashville, TN. Private Interment with the family will take place at the request of Dr. Hurt. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Alive Hospice of Nashville and the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort.
