Joseph Anderson Lawrence

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Joseph (Joe) A. Lawrence, who peacefully departed this life on March 30, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100. Joe was born on July 30, 1925, in El Dorado, Arkansas, to Samuel Grayson Lawrence and Helen White Lawrence, and grew up in Jackson, MS. He lived a life full of love, adventure, and profound dedication to his family and community.

Joe was predeceased by his first wife, Jackie Lawrence, with whom he shared 39 cherished years, and their son, Joseph (Joe) Lawrence. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Helen, his brother Grayson Lawrence, and his sisters, Louise Lawrence Sanders and Patricia Lawrence Cogbill. The strength of these familial bonds enriched Joe's life and left him with countless memories of laughter, love, and shared experiences.

In 1991, Joe found love again with Mayme Lee Blankenship Wood, who became his devoted wife and partner for 34 wonderful years. Together, they built a life filled with joy, travel, and spending time with family and friends. Their lives were anchored by their active involvement in the Glen Leven Presbyterian Church, where they nurtured a spiritual home and a community of enduring friendships. Joe's journey began with service to his country, bravely serving in the South Pacific with the US Navy during World War II. His experiences during the war shaped his character and outlook, instilling in him a profound appreciation for life and the importance of service. After the war, Joe pursued higher education at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.

For over three decades, Joe dedicated his professional life to Geigy Pharmaceuticals, now Novartis, where he excelled as a sales representative. During his impressive career he formed many lasting relationships. Joe’s career was marked by integrity, a positive outlook, and a genuine passion for helping others.

Throughout his life, Joe was a pillar of his community. A devoted member of Glen Leven Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, he served as an Elder and contributed to numerous committees, embodying the values of faith and community service. His unwavering commitment to his church and his community will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. Joe's legacy lives on through his loving wife, Mayme Lee Lawrence, his son, Kevin Lawrence, and daughters-in-law Rhonda (Kevin) and Michele (Joe) his brother, Robert L. Lawrence, MD, six adoring grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. He was a beacon of love and wisdom to them all, creating a lasting impact through his kindness, humor, and unwavering optimism. Joe's presence in the lives of his family and friends was a gift that will be treasured forever.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held on April 6, 2026, at 12:00 PM, with visitation for 2 hours prior to the service at Glen Leven Presbyterian Church, located at 3906 Franklin Pike, Nashville, Tennessee 37204. Internment at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Glen Leven Presbyterian Church or the American Heart Association in honor of Joe's enduring spirit and generous heart.

As we say goodbye to Joe, we remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and resilience. While he will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
