It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joy Sheldon Dunphy, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who left this world on October 18, 2024, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 86. Joy was one of the most joyful souls you’d ever know, always smiling and laughing, traits that were truly infectious to those around her.
Joy dedicated her life to raising her five children and caring for her husband, Donald Dunphy, who preceded her in death in February 2002. As her children grew, she embraced her role as the neighborhood mom, extending her love and care to all children in the community. Joy’s warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
In her later years, Joy lived in Nashville with her daughter and son-in-law, creating precious memories and continuing to spread joy to her family. She is survived by her twin sister, Joni Snow; sisters, Judy Sheldon and Janine Levijarvi; and brother, Jay Sheldon.
Joy leaves behind her cherished children: Angela Sterr (David), Steve Dunphy, Holly Jarrett (Dendy), Matthew Dunphy (Carissa), and Donny Ulman (Lavetta). Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren, Stephanie Richards (Alex), Violet Jarrett, and Jody Jarrett, as well as her great-grandchildren, Laurel Dyer and Nicholas Richards.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents, James and Anne Sheldon; her husband, Donald Dunphy; her son, Daniel Dunphy; and her sister, Janice Schwener.
In honor of Joy’s life, a small family-only memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
Joy Sheldon Dunphy will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her joyful spirit and the love she shared with everyone she encountered.
