Julia Whaley Aden

Julia Whaley Aden, 81, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, selfless service, and deep devotion to her family, church, and community.

Julia was born on February 2, 1945, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Mary Frizzell Doud and John Hickman Whaley. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her brothers, John Whaley and Ralph Whaley.

On January 1, 1965, Julia married the love of her life, Gareth Smythe Aden, at the Church of Christ in Nashville, Tennessee. Together they shared more than 61 years of marriage, building a life rooted in faith, love, and service.

A graduate of the Harpeth Hall School, Julia continued her education at Salem College. Throughout her life, she faithfully served the Episcopal Church, volunteering in the front offices of Christ Episcopal Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church, along with volunteering her time at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Her commitment to serving others was evident in every aspect of her life.

Above all, Julia was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and faithful friend. She found joy in caring for others and lived with grace, kindness, and compassion. In her younger years, she enjoyed a passion for raising and showing Shetland Sheepdogs. As the years passed, she devoted much of her time to serving her church as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Altar Guild, and a front office volunteer.

Julia was actively involved in numerous ministries and organizations, including Seniors Helping Others, the Senior Ministry, Caring Connections, the Archives Committee, and the flower delivery ministry, where she faithfully delivered flowers to parishioners in need of comfort and encouragement. Her servant’s heart and quiet generosity touched countless lives.

She is lovingly survived by her husband, Gareth Smythe Aden; her son, Spenser Aden and his wife, Kimberley Aden; her daughter, Erika Best and her husband, Philip Best; and her cherished grandchildren, Joshua Aden and his wife, Trinity Aden, Cody Aden, Lake Best, and Gwenelise Best.

Julia also leaves behind a large circle of treasured friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness, steadfast faith, and genuine love. She left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her, and her memory will continue to be a blessing for generations to come.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3:30 p.m., at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 4715 Harding Pike, Nashville, Tennessee.

The family invites all who knew and loved Julia to join them in celebrating a beautifully lived life. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of faith, service, compassion, and unconditional love will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
