She was 78.
June was the first woman to serve as President of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and was a well-respected and thoughtful voice on all matters related to college athletics throughout her career. She started work at Vanderbilt in 1973 as the secretary to the National Commodore Club and retired in 2001 as the school’s Associate Athletic Director for all non-revenue sports. Along the way she served in numerous other capacities.
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame inducted her in 2004. She also is a member of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame (1997), the Tennessee Sports Writers Hall of Fame (2007) and the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame’s inaugural class (2008).
June loved the Vanderbilt Commodores, the Chicago Cubs and her howling beagles. Anchor Down and Go Cubs Go!
Born in Nashville in 1940, June graduated from Hillsboro High in 1958 and Christian College in Colombia, MO in 1960.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Weidner Hopton, her father, W.E. Hopton and her husband, Bill Stewart. She is survived by her daughter Marjorie Williams Quin (Brooks), her son Richard W. Williams (Stefanie), stepson Tim Stewart (Melanie), granddaughter Josephine June Quin and numerous family members and loving friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, TN 37215 on February 22, 2019 at 3:00 p.m., followed by a private family graveside internment. Visitation with the family will precede the service from 12:30-2:45 at the church in the Gathering Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Commodore Club, Vanderbilt University at 2100 West End Avenue, Suite 1200, Nashville, Tennessee 37203, or the Nashville Humane Society at 213 Oceola Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee 37209.
