In 1978, Ken earned his undergraduate degree in English Literature from Harvard University. He received his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1983. Dr. Sears completed his residency and board certification in Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego in 1986.
Ken was an early member of Anesthesia Consultants of Nashville, which subsequently merged to form Anesthesia Medical Group (AMG). As president from 1996 to 2006 Dr. Sears provided invaluable leadership and guidance to AMG; he was also elected to the AMG Board of Directors where he served from 1994 to 2011. He was a founding board member for Syús since its inception in 2004, and continued to serve until his death.
Dr. Sears was born in Lexington Kentucky, and was preceded in death by his father Kenneth L. Sears, M.D.; his mother, Jane Bowen Sears, M.D.; his sister, Margie Sears; and beloved dog Lucy. Ken’s memory lives on through his exceptional wife Cheryl, her extended family, his many acquaintances and close friends.
To say Ken was a Renaissance man would be an understatement. He leaned into life with an insatiable sense of adventure, both intellectually and physically. Cheryl was the only woman who could keep up with him. Team sports like rugby, lacrosse, and rowing got him primed for the lifelong sports that he pursued with passion and a bit of vengeance: snow and water skiing, cycling, and the sport that kept his attention the longest—yacht racing. His happiest times were on his boat in Mexico with Cheryl and Lucy. A crowning achievement was their trans-pacific yacht race to Hawaii aboard their sloop named Blue. Ken did not waste his time on this earth.
He will be remembered for his integrity, a wicked sense of humor, and a razor-sharp intellect.
We will miss you, Dr. Sears, but rest assured we will keep your legacy alive with stories, stories and more stories. You made a huge impact on all of us who got to know you.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Ruby, 2411 Blakemore Avenue on Tuesday, January 30. An informal reception begins at 6 PM, followed by a tribute at 6:30 PM during which you are invited to share stories or favorite memories. Parking is available at the Harris-Hillman School
