Lawrence Lindsley Davis passed away peacefully at his home on April 11, 2018. Maynard, as he was known to his many friends and business associates, was 76. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Lindsley Davis and Namon Buell Davis, and his beloved wife, Karen Haynes Davis. He is survived by his sister, Emily Joy Davis; stepsons, Benjamin Young and Alexander Young; Benjamin Young’s son, Burton Davis Young; cousin, Phillip Lindsley and special friend and devoted caregiver, Gina Cate.
Born on February 18, 1942 in Nashville, Tennessee, Maynard, a lifelong member of Brook Hollow Baptist Church, attended Eakin Elementary School and Montgomery Bell Academy, from which he graduated with the Class of 1960. He attended Vanderbilt University for two years but withdrew in 1962 to pursue a real life work experience at Ford Glass Plant. While there, his co-workers gave him the enduring nickname “Maynard”, after a 1960’s television character.
In 1964, Maynard volunteered to serve his country in the United States Navy. Following his release from active duty, Airman Davis served in the Naval Reserve while also being employed by Wurtzburg Brothers, a printing industry leader, until he formed his own printing and publishing company. After selling his first company, Maynard did many freelance printing projects but was most proud of the success and subsequent sale of his second venture, American Profile Magazine.
Because of his business success, Maynard was able to pursue his passions, which included restoration of classic automobiles and motorcycles, travel, fishing, hiking, skiing and being “a below average golfer”. He loved his Koi pond and daily walks with his four legged companion, Sammy Davis, Jr. Maynard was just a good guy and will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home located on the grounds of Mount Olivet Cemetery from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm on April 16. Graveside services to follow visitation, with Philip Lindsley officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Tom King and the MBA Class of 1960. Active pallbearers will be Greg Bridwell, Ken Gregory, Knox Haynes, Jon Ladd, Alexander Young and Benjamin Young.
