MAGINN, Leonard Joseph Estes, PhD, died as quietly as he had lived on February 28, 2013, at Alive Hospice due to complications from a fall. He was a devoted husband to Virginia Maginn (Deceased 2011) and never left her side caring for all her needs during her lengthy illness. He was a loving father to M.J. Ayers-Maginn, Nashville, TN, Stephanie Ann Maginn, Hockessin, DE, and Rebecca S. Maginn, Chicago, IL, and adored grandfather to seven grandpuppies. Leonard served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1948. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Engineering, Magna Cum Laude, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. As an electrical designing engineer he did research and design for Aladdin Industries and Northern Telecom while teaching and enlightening aspiring engineers. He was a founding and lifetime member of IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and a member of Knights of Columbus. As a couple, Leonard and Virginia served on the Parish Church Council and renovation committee, and organized many fundraisers, including Springfests, Fall Fests, Halloween parties and Advent Workshops, for the Cathedral of The Incarnation. Leonard spent many hours driving around Nashville delivering birthday roses to the elderly and homebound parish members. In 1995 Leonard and Virginia received a special Apostolic Blessing from Pope John Paul II for “Service to the Church”. “Saint” Leonard, as he was named by his friends in his Emmaus group, set a high standard for patience, devotion and faith. He will be greatly missed but has now, we are quite sure, joined the other saints in Heaven. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 1:30 pm on Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 at the Cathedral of The Incarnation, with Rev. Patrick Kibby celebrant. Pallbearers; his Emmaus group. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held 11 am until 1 pm Tuesday, March 5th in the Fleming Center at The Cathedral. We would like to thank the staff of Alive Hospice, who were so very sweet to Dad in his final days.
