SMITH, Loyd Axley. Sixty four years ago from this coming November the 24th, the proud parents Carolyn Montgomery Smith and William Loyd Smith, Jr. welcomed into their loving arms their first born child, Loyd Axley Smith. On October 28th their first born returned to those loving arms in heaven. Loyd attended Parmer School, Battle Ground Academy and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy. He was a Boy Scout with Troop 31 at St. George’s where he was an Eagle Scout. After high school graduation, he attended Emory University and graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a member of Beta Alpha Psi Honor Society. After graduation his professional career started as a Certified Public Accountant with Ernst and Ernst and later joined his father as partner at Loyd Smith and Associates. Later in life he went back to school to fulfill a lifelong dream to obtain a Master’s Degree in Divinity from Vanderbilt University. Loyd was an active third generation member of West End United Methodist Church and served as their business administrator for several years. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed at the Bellevue YMCA where he was employed at his death. He was a devoted and loving father to his daughter and son Emma Aiken Smith and Loyd Axley Smith, Jr. He was also the big brother to his surviving brothers, Monty and Ricky Smith and his little sister, Carol Stephenson (Riggs) and uncle to Maggie, Jackson, Caroline, and Ricky, Jr.. A celebration of life will be held at West End United Methodist Church at 2 pm Friday, November 1st, with visitation in Reed Hall beginning at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to either West End United Methodist Church, 2200 West End Ave, 37203 or the Bellevue YMCA, 8101 Hwy 100, 37221

Loyd, you will always live in my heart. The world was a better place with you in it, and I was a better person for having known you. Always...

Emma and Axley,
I was so very sorry to learn of your Dad's death. I met him many years ago at a church retreat and always valued his friendship. Axley, I have fond memories of your Dad bringing you to my house for you to sell me the wonderful Christmas gift wrap paper! You were quite a salesman; he was so proud of you.

Carol, Ricky and family,

Please accept my most profound condolences to each of you and your entire family on Loyd's passing. I wish each of you solace and deepest sympathies. Our world was better off with Loyd as a part of it, and that is something that all who knew him can remember and cherish. Our greatest sympathies and best regards to your entire family and to all of Loyd's friends and acquaintances, as well.

My first job in Nashville was at Loyd Smith & Associates. Loyd A. and his dad, Loyd Jr., were the owners. Both were excellent CPAs as is Ricky Smith, Loyd A.'s brother. My thoughts and prayers are with Loyd A.'s kids, and Ricky, Carol and Monty. It's not an easy thing losing a sibling. I'm so sorry.

I only met Loyd a few times and had the pleasure of meeting his children, Emma and Axley about 4 years ago. We became friends immediately. My heart goes out to Emma and Axley at this time as I knew the love and fondness they had for their dad. Kathy Grisham
