SMITH, Loyd Axley. Sixty four years ago from this coming November the 24th, the proud parents Carolyn Montgomery Smith and William Loyd Smith, Jr. welcomed into their loving arms their first born child, Loyd Axley Smith.
On October 28th their first born returned to those loving arms in heaven.
Loyd attended Parmer School, Battle Ground Academy and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy. He was a Boy Scout with Troop 31 at St. George’s where he was an Eagle Scout. After high school graduation, he attended Emory University and graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a member of Beta Alpha Psi Honor Society.
After graduation his professional career started as a Certified Public Accountant with Ernst and Ernst and later joined his father as partner at Loyd Smith and Associates.
Later in life he went back to school to fulfill a lifelong dream to obtain a Master’s Degree in Divinity from Vanderbilt University.
Loyd was an active third generation member of West End United Methodist Church and served as their business administrator for several years.
He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed at the Bellevue YMCA where he was employed at his death.
He was a devoted and loving father to his daughter and son Emma Aiken Smith and Loyd Axley Smith, Jr. He was also the big brother to his surviving brothers, Monty and Ricky Smith and his little sister, Carol Stephenson (Riggs) and uncle to Maggie, Jackson, Caroline, and Ricky, Jr..
A celebration of life will be held at West End United Methodist Church at 2 pm Friday, November 1st, with visitation in Reed Hall beginning at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to either West End United Methodist Church, 2200 West End Ave, 37203 or the Bellevue YMCA, 8101 Hwy 100, 37221
