Hendersonville, TN
November 9, 1929- October 19, 2020
Margaret McCreery was born in Columbia, Tennessee and passed away at home in Hendersonville with hospice support and her devoted children near by. She was a member of Tulip Street United Methodist Church for over 70 years, where she met and married her husband, William G. (Billy) McCreery. She was a master seamstress, having completed many classes, programs and certifications for such, and having been a sewing instructor to many. She was a member of various sewing clubs, quilting circles and crafting groups. During World War II she worked in the banking industry.
Margaret had a deep faith and often drove other elderly members to church when they were unable to drive themselves. She also taught Sunday school classes, served as the president of the Women’s Ministry and was a member of the choir in the 1960’s & 70’s.
She was a long time member of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, working to end the stigma associated with having a mental illness.
Margaret also cared a great deal for animals of all kinds, but especially dogs and cats. One of her final companions, her cat Sheba, always slept by her side and will miss her greatly. Margaret donated to many animal related charities and firmly believed in spaying and neutering your pets.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Williams G. McCreery, son, Fred J. McCreery, brother, Elam Lackey, and parents Elam and Miriam Lackey. She is survived by a large, loving family, many of whom were by her side towards the end, or wished to be. She is survived by her daughter, Marianne (Brandon) Warren, son William G. McCreery, great-children Mary (James) Hudspeth, Sarah (Robert) Soderstrom, Brandiann (Eric) Rellinger and Scott McCreery. Margaret has eleven great-grandchildren; Isaiah and Shiloh Rellinger, Lela and Dasius Wheaton, Saxon Soderstrom, Aurora, Sabrina, Catarina, Alexandria, Elliot and Willa Husdspeth. She also has two great-great-grandchildren; Airlie and Atlas Hudspeth, and one great-great-granddaughter on the way Elise.
Margaret was a great philanthropist and donated to many charitable organizations. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Tulip Street Church- Frances Southerland Legacy Fund (through the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee), which works to provide for low income families and children in the community.
